Cable and drum replacement on an Amarr door in Henderson typically runs $130 – $250 for the cable side and up to $340 when the drum and spring assembly needs work too. We stock Amarr-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. The way you’ll usually find out is the door starts jerking on one side, or you’ll see a frayed cable hanging loose near the top of the track.
Amarr doors use heavier-gauge cable than a lot of what you’ll find on a shelf at the hardware store. That’s not a knock on the store brand. It’s a spec difference. On a 7-foot Amarr door, you’re usually working with 1/8-inch or 3/32-inch aircraft-grade cable, and the drum is grooved to match the cable diameter exactly. Put a mismatched drum on there and the cable rides up over the groove, binds, and frays within months. We see it all the time. Homeowners call us because the door worked fine for six weeks after a cheaper fix, then the cable let go in the middle of the night.
Which Amarr Models This Applies To
If you’ve got an Amarr residential door built in the last 20 years, there’s a good chance it’s a Lincoln, Heritage, Classica, or Oak Summit series. Those are the four we see most in Henderson garages, and they share a common drum profile on the standard 7-foot height. The Lincoln and Heritage lines run a 400-8 or 400-12 drum depending on door weight. Classica and Oak Summit, being heavier carriage-style doors, usually step up to a 400-144 or equivalent, and the cable goes from 3/32 to 1/8 inch.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Amarr stamps the door’s serial number on a label near the bottom of the top section, not on the edge. You’ll need a flashlight and maybe a step stool. That label tells us the exact series, door weight, and original drum spec. Without it, we’re measuring the drum diameter, groove count, and cable thickness by hand. We’ll get there either way, but the label makes it exact.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Amarr’s own cables and drums are well made, but they’re not magic. A quality aftermarket drum made to the same measurements performs identically at a lower installed price. We carry both and we’ll quote whichever makes sense for your door. If your door is under warranty, we’ll flag that before you spend a dollar. Brock Garage Doors Henderson is an independent service provider, not an Amarr dealer or affiliate, so our recommendation is based on what fits your door and your budget, not a parts contract.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door is heavier on one side than the other. When a cable starts to fray, it stretches slightly before it breaks. You’ll feel the door fight you more on the left or right when you lift it manually. That’s the cable losing tension while the spring is still doing its job.
- You can see loose strands near the bottom bracket or the drum. This is the one you catch before the failure. If you’re standing in the garage looking up at the corners, you’ll notice what looks like fuzz or a single strand peeled away from the main cable. Do not touch it. That strand is under tension and it will cut a glove like paper.
- The door jerks or shudders on the way down. That means the cable is slipping in the drum groove, usually because the drum is worn at the cable entry point or the cable has lost its lay and isn’t sitting tight anymore.
- You hear a loud pop, followed by the door dropping crooked. That’s the cable letting go entirely. The pop is the cable snapping and whipping back against the track. It’s loud enough you’ll feel it through the wall. The door is now hanging by whatever’s left on the other side, which usually means the other cable is about to go too.
- The cable has jumped off the drum and is wrapped around the shaft. If you see cable coiled around the bar above the door instead of sitting in the drum groove, stop using the door. Every cycle you run is chewing up the cable and scoring the shaft. The fix is a re-spool and usually a new cable, not just a re-wrap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Henderson homeowners, figure $130 – $250 for a standard Amarr cable replacement on one side, and $180 – $340 when the job includes both cables plus one or both drums. Where you land inside those ranges depends on drum type, cable gauge, and whether the spring assembly needs to be de-tensioned or reset. If the spring is still good, we work around it. If it’s original to the door and showing wear, replacing it at the same time is usually cheaper than opening the whole system up twice.
Every quote is a written price, handed to you before we touch a single bolt. That number includes the parts, the labor, the re-tensioning, and a test cycle count of ten full opens and closes. You’ll also get the 365-day Done Right Promise in writing. If that cable or drum fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No argument, no invoice, no “that’s wear and tear.” It’s covered.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the label for your Amarr model number. You can take a picture of the frayed cable and text it to us. You can even test the balance by disconnecting the opener and lifting the door to chest height to see if it holds. Those are useful checks. What you should not do is touch the cable itself or try to remove the old one. The cable on a torsion spring system is under constant, serious tension, even when the door is down. One wrong move with a pry bar and that stored energy releases into whatever’s closest, which is usually your hand or your face.
We’ve been doing this work in Henderson for over two decades. Wade Mercer learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and his crew has spent plenty of time out near Green Valley Ranch and the older neighborhoods off Boulder Highway. We’ve seen the same mistakes repeat for twenty years. The pattern is always the same: a homeowner saves a hundred dollars on a cable, spends four hours on a Saturday fighting it, then calls us anyway because the door is stuck halfway open. If it’s questionable, call us. A real person answers, including weekends. We’ll give you a straight number over the phone at (775) 458-8864.
FAQs
In Henderson’s dry heat, you’ll typically get 7 to 10 years out of a set of Amarr cables before the metal starts to fatigue at the bottom bracket, which is where they always fail first. Drums last longer, often outliving two full cable sets. The heat isn’t the main problem; it’s the fine dust that blows through the garage gaps and settles in the drum grooves, acting like sandpaper on the cable every time the door cycles.
No. You can’t splice a garage door cable safely or reliably. Once the strands start separating, the cable’s rated strength is compromised and the failure is a matter of days, not months. The only correct fix is a full cable replacement, and in our experience, that’s also the cheaper fix when you factor in the damage a snapped cable does to the track and the other side of the door.
A standard Amarr cable and drum replacement takes 45 to 75 minutes on site, assuming we don’t need to order a non-standard drum for a heavier model. Most jobs are done in one visit because we stock the common Amarr drum profiles on our trucks. Heavy doors with worn springs sometimes take another 20 minutes or so if the spring has to be reset to get the tension right.
We stock the cable gauges and drum profiles for the Amarr lines we see most in Henderson: Lincoln, Heritage, Classica, and Oak Summit. Our trucks also carry parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, so if the opener side of the system is acting up at the same time, we can usually handle both in one call. If your door is a less common Amarr model, we’ll measure on site and have the right part in within a day or two.
No. The price we quote over the phone assumes the common Amarr setup, and if our tech arrives and finds something different, you’ll get a written price for the actual job before anything is removed. You approve it, we do the work. The number on the invoice matches the number you approved.
Tell me what it’s doing. I’ll tell you what it costs. Call (775) 458-8864 and Wade Mercer or one of our techs will walk you through exactly what you’re looking at, what it should cost, and whether it’s a same-day job or something we schedule for tomorrow morning. The estimate is free, and you’ll have a written number before any work starts.
